Liars and Tears and Bruises- Oh My!

Hello Friends!

Do not be disheartened by the title of this post! I am still having a wonderful time in Sydney, but of course... the time has come when my luck starts to run out and my inner klutz starts to make regular appearances. So here are some stories from my latest messy moments...

Liars

As I may or may not have mentioned before, one of the greatest benefits of the Boston University program is the opportunity to participate in an internship here in Australia during the second half of the semester. My internship advisor has been an absolute gem- he's a very experienced, well connected man who takes great interest in the goals and visions of the students the places into internships. So one day shoots me an e-mail saying that I have an interview set up at 6 pm with a top advertising internship here in Sydney. Exciting! Unfortunately for me, this interview fell between class and the time I had set aside for finishing a major paper due the next day. But! Priorities are priorities, so I said I would go.

First of all- this agency is located on a street with a very strange name. To protect the agency- we'll just call the street Fanny. I have to find Fanny street. As I'm walking down the road, trying to adjust my high heels ( I had 30 minutes between class and when I had to leave) I begin to realize that Google Maps is crap, and I have absolutely no idea where I was going. I stopped and asked directions a few times, avoiding the word "Fanny" at all costs. After a few friendly chats with some street musicians (which cost me about a buck a pop) I was finally headed in the right direction. At this point, I was up four blisters and down 30 minutes. I had twenty minutes to get to my interview on Fanny St. After a few minutes doing the chicken dance on the side of the road during rush hour, I managed to snag a cab. I instructed him that I was a damsel in distress- I had twenty dollars, twenty minutes, and one very important interview. The driver assured me he could get me to my destination quickly and cheaply.

HE LIED.

About five minutes in to the car ride, my cab driver decided to inform me that he had to stop for gas. DURING RUSH HOUR! I didn't get a word in edgewise before we pulled up to the station, and he hopped out to fuel up. I dialed a friend from school furiously as I watched him leisurely pay for his gas and peruse the snack isle. After receiving the phone number for the agency from my friend, I watched in horror as the cab driver exited the store, and assist a woman with her gas pump. I literally jumped out of the van, and pulled the driver back into the cab. When we're finally driving again, he decides to inform me that he isn't entirely sure exactly where we're going, but he's going to drop me off in the area. Another agonizing 10 or so minutes later, I'm getting out of the cab.. asking everyone who walks by where Fanny St. is. Naturally, nobody has any clue what I'm talking about. Turns out Fanny St. is actually more like a narrow alley. Fanny Alley.

But this ends well! I made it to the interview more or less on time (they were informed that I was having taxi difficulty), and the interview went splendidly. The company is youthful, vibrant, and looks like it's going to be a real blast. Although I had to soak my feet four an hour afterward, it was totally worth it.

Bruises

As some of you may know- my background in coordination is a little lackluster. I can't really catch a ball, rub my stomach while patting my head, or walk and chew gum. Turns out I can't really walk and send a text message either.

I was leaving class the other day. I was very excited because it was a brand new class I was taking about Aboriginal culture taught by an Aboriginal woman. So I'm leaving class telling my friend about the class, with my professor right behind me. I whipped out my phone to check my text messages, and next thing I know, my phone is skidding across the floor and I'm on my hands and knees, about three concrete steps lower than I had been a second ago. I turn around and my friend, and RA and my professor all have their mouths open. It must have been one of those situations where they really wanted to laugh, but first I had to demonstrate that I wasn't seriously injured first. So I laughed, then they laughed... and now my professor must think I need a helmet.

Fast forward a few days and I'm out on the town, enjoying the nightlife of Sydney. I'm in a dimly lit bar with a friend looking for another group of friends we're supposed to be meeting. My phone starts to ring, and so I answer it, but start searching for a quieter place to talk. I spy an open chair on the patio, so I hurry to grab the chair before someone else does. Next thing I know, I'm falling backwards.. my phone is yet again skidding across the ground, and I land on my butt. Next to me my friend is doubled over laughing. I hear a faint rattling sound, and I look up to see my nose and forehead prints on the glass door that I seemed to miss on my way out to the patio. Needless to say... we met our group of friends at a different bar.

Tears

I think the combination of my recent mishaps, combined with the pressure of completing a 12 page paper started to make me a little crazy. I'm sitting in the library today, typing the rest of my paper furiously, and a friend comes over to distract me. He tells me about this video on Youtube of Christian the Lion. (Go watch it after this, and the story makes more sense). Basically, a while back, two men adopted a lion cub, raised him, and released him into the wild. Then after a few years, they went back to visit the lion, and a joyful reunion ensued. It doesn't sound so bad, but something about the happy lion footage paired with the Whitney Houston song struck a real cord with me. I realized too late that I had tears streaming down my face. I burst out laughing when I realized I was crying, and then crying when I realized I was laughing. My friend sat watching me with eyebrows raised as I tried to compose my very tearful, snotty laughing fit. I ended up having to go to the bathroom and pull myself together.

For those of you who might not believe the power of this video.. here's the link.

If you don't cry... you probably don't have a heart.

On that note- let's have some pictures!

Till next time!

Wizard of Oz

Hello everyone!

Updates on Oz! (Oz = Aus = Australia. Kind of a local thing )

Lots has gone on since I last blogged- so I'll try to keep this short- for all you Reader's Digest fans.

The weekend before last I went on a trip to Port Stephens- Australian wine country! We (group of program students and I) left late Friday and returned Sunday evening. The hotel we stayed in was definitely a little dated for my taste- with a dance floor directly beneath my room, which kept me up until 2 every morning. But the adventures were fun and worth while. We went to a shark and ray feeding center on Saturday- which allowed us to get into various tanks with small sharks and rays. After the feeding we went dune boarding- which was kind of like snowboarding down sand dunes on your butt- WITHOUT a chair lift! A small mountain climb and one local brewery later and we were out like lights. The following Sunday was a procession of wine and chocolate tasting- and then we headed back into Sydney for another week of classes!

Speaking of which- classes are definitely starting to ramp up. First quiz was last Thursday (took about 2 hours to complete). First papers are due this Friday- so everyone is more or less staying in this week to crack down on our respective projects. I've had a wonderful time exploring the city at night- finding wonderful restaurants and hotspots around every corner!

Since the actual academic semester is rather abbreviated, we're all looking forward to our spring break! I'm making plans with my mother who is planning a rather indulgent trip to Cairns to visit the Barrier Reef and rainforest. Following that will be the start of the second half of the semester, where we'll all be interning at various companies around Sydney. So far it looks as if I'll be in an account management position at an Australian ad agency- the exact agency has yet to be determined, but I'm very much looking forward to it!

That's all for now- Keep on a readin'!

Basically a local

G’Day everyone!

It is Monday, August 30th, and I have been in Sydney just under a week now.  I can’t believe it’s been only a week- and I cannot wait to come home.

JUST KIDDING!

Sydney is amazing. To begin with- everyone is friendly. Nearly every Australian I have talked to has with either lived or visited the United States- or they have friends or family in the States. People are so eager to hear about what we are doing in Sydney, how long we’ll be staying, what we’re studying, etc. The city is sprawling- when you see it from the harbor the size of it blows your mind. I have only explored one side of it- the other half of it is across the bridge. There are hundreds and hundreds of little shops, restaurants, bars, and pubs. The food and shopping are great- and everyone really gets in to the nightlife. The pubs fill up early with people going out for drinks after work. Sydney also feels very safe. We’ve been warned about petty theft and things of that nature- but there don’t seem to be many shady characters wandering around, and people don’t approach you on the streets for anything- which is nice. The city is absolutely beautiful, and the harbor is even better. The weather is hovering in the high 60’s, low 70’s at the moment, but I’ve been told that it warms up very quickly. Australians love the springtime, and everyone has said that we picked the perfect time of year to visit.

The past week has been just amazing. And exhausting. In addition to routine orientation to the Boston University program (which sounds like it is going to be an amazing academic experience), we have gotten to know each other while participating in different activities. There are about 60 or so of us here- most are from Boston University, but some are from California, Maine, and North Carolina. And Michigan. J We’ve had barbeques on the rooftop of our apartment building, a catered boat cruise around the harbor, and a scavenger hunt through the city. (The scavenger hunt was more like the Amazing Race. I could not believe how tired I was afterward).  The students on the trip are incredibly friendly- and I can tell that we’re already starting to become a little family.

I’ll throw in some pictures throughout this post- but if there’s anything you’d like to know- send me a question and I’ll answer it. I miss you all lots and I cannot wait to tell you all about my adventures when I get back!

Cheers!

Hurry Up and Wait

Ahoy!

This isn't going to be a very exciting blog post- but it might include some handy tips for people who are still getting ready for their overseas adventures.

Yesterday was my last day at work (Shout out to everyone at the MSUE office!!). The next couple of days are pretty much going to consist of reading and re-reading maps, sorting out vitamins, and going commando in ugly clothes because everything is packed. But as I've been sitting around waiting for the next 72 hours to pass, I've come up with a couple of handy tips for people who are still prepping to leave for their destination.

I don't want to toot my own horn... but if I'm good at anything, it's fitting a lot of crap in a small space. (Anyone who has been to my house knows it runs in the family) But the guy who started this website is the Big-Crap-Small-Space MASTER.  It was super duper handy for me- it'll be super duper handy for you too. (For the record... I wasn't actually able to fit everything into one bag- but the second bag is pretty small. I'm still chalking it up to a victory.)
Me: 1   Law of Conservation of Mass: 0

One of the most confusing things about this whole trip has been money. I know. Big surprise. Obviously spending any amount of time in any foreign country costs a pretty penny- so spending several months there on TOP of tuition is basically going to set me back for the first decade of my career. That being said, I'm trying to mop up any additional expenses if I can. The most annoying of which: overseas transaction fees! So here's my tip- find a bank that won't charge you! My personal choice was Bank of America- they have partnered with lots of major banks across the globe, so when I make a transaction overseas, it's like I'm just at another BOA. And since the international banks are pretty big- it's easy to find a bank or ATM. I also signed up for a package that allows me to do everything wirelessly (online or with an ATM). That way, I've managed to avoid monthly checking fees as well. Woo! Also- you leave with a fully functioning debit card- so there's none of that wait-ten-days-for-your-snail-mail-debit-card crap. (If you read this and start an account- say I referred you. I'll buy you sumthin' cool with the $25 they give me for the referral :)
Also: Check out that Tina Parole song. She looks a little scary in the video- but she's got great boots.

3) Hard Copies!
It's so so so easy to carry everything around digitally. I have so many zip drives I could start making them into jewelry. BUT! It's also a good idea to either leave an extra zip drive at home, or leave someone with some black-and-white, ink-and-paper information. That way if my plane goes down with me, my laptop and all my zip drive bracelets- my parents back home still have all of my banking information. And my flight information- so they can sue themselves into a comfortable retirement.

Me: 0    Knock On Wood: 1

I realize I just wrote those last three tips like I'm some sort of cool travel expert. Which I'm not. So also use caution/common sense when planning and packing.  Also- I hope I don't get in trouble for naming names (onebag.com, BOA). Is there some sort of copyright something I should be following? Not sure. Cross my fingers on that one.

LAST THING- I have a really long layover in LA, and a really long plane ride after that. So if anyone wants to recommend a good book- that'd be great. I don't really like fantasy stuff or anything too difficult- so if your recommendation includes vampires, dragons, or  words with more than three syllables, just leave it out.

:) Thanks for reading!

Ciao for now

New to She'll Be Apples

Well Hellooooooooo everyone.

This is my first post of my first blog EVER! I've been fighting the idea of creating a blog all summer... because quite honestly I have no idea if I'll even be committed enough to following through. BUT! After thinking long and hard about it ( I flipped a coin ) and reading through other blogs, ( Welcome to Noise Island ) I've decided to give it a go. So here's the deal- give me feedback to let me know you're reading it, and I'll keep posting. If I feel like nobody is reading it then I likely won't continue. Make sense? Yes.

So! Here's my little preface. I decided to go to Australia for several reasons. 1) I didn't have to learn a different language. 2) It's warm. 3) Finding Nemo.

I chose BU because they have a really great internship program in Advertising and Public Relations.

Fast forward several months, essays, and thousands of dollars and here I am! 9 days to departure, finally giving in to pressure and starting a blog. Hope you all read and enjoy!
